2008 Coleman 50 States in 50 Days Challenge Description/Features

Site Description and Purpose

The purpose of the 2008 Coleman 50 States in 50 Days Challenge Web site is to motivate children and adolescents (upper elementary, middle, and high school aged kids) to become physically active by providing them with a fun and educational Web site that encourages them to record and track their physical activity in minutes and/or steps while striving to virtually reach the summit of the highest point in each of the 50 states. The Challenge will follow after 8th grade science teacher Mike Haugen's adventure to each of these summits. Students, in addition to their virtual hike, will also see special video reports of Mike's actual adventure. Students are really going to enjoy this!

With this Challenge, Coleman is motivating kids to get outside and recreate more. Students have approximately three months to complete all 50 segments. Each segment is completed when a child reports being active at least 60 minutes (or 10,000 steps) for that day. Upon completing a segment, students can track their progress on a U.S. map.

The Coleman 50 States in 50 Days Challenge recognizes those who participate to the highest extent. All students and individuals who complete the Challenge and reach all 50 highpoints will receive an award and will be able to print a congratulatory personalized certificate commemorating their achievement.

In addition, the most physically active schools (of those with 50 or more students registered for the Challenge) will be identified by dividing the total number of students at the school who are registered for the Challenge by the number who complete the entire 50/50 hike. Coleman will provide an award to the top 25 schools with 100 percent participation-to-completion ratios.

As an added incentive, Coleman will send a $50 gift card redeemable at www.coleman.com to the first 50 teachers to sign up, register their school and have at least 10 students complete the student registration.

Registration Directions

Limitations of the 2008 Coleman 50 States in 50 Days Challenge Web site

  • The site will come down on December 31, 2008.
  • Only students who record either 60 physical activity minutes or 10,000 steps (or a combination of the two) can earn a segment to move toward reaching the next highpoint.
  • A student can only earn one segment per day.
  • Students cannot enter unlimited number of miles or steps per day. The cap is set at 120 activity minutes/20,000 steps per day.
  • The final list of physical activities for which a child can record minutes or steps is limited to the list that is available.
  • Students can only enter minutes or steps up to 3 days prior. However teachers can enter up to 122 days prior so if a student misses a day, or days, the teacher can enter the minutes, or steps, for a student.
  • For schools to be eligible for recognition as one of the most active schools, they must have at least 50 student registrants.

Important Dates/Timeline

  • Thursday, August 21, 2008: Pre-registration begins for everyone. Students can register after their school has been registered by a teacher, but cannot log activity yet.
  • Monday, September 1, 2008: Site officially opens, so students can start to record physical activity minutes/steps.
  • Tuesday, November 11, 2008: Registration officially closes for everyone. Teachers cannot register any kids on their own either. Teachers who registered on this day need to remember that kids will have to be active everyday until the end of December.
  • Wednesday, December 31, 2008: Entire site closes. Hike is over.
  • Thursday, January 15, 2009: Top schools are announced on Web site.

Choosing the most physically active schools

  • Schools must have at least 50 students registered to qualify for this honor.
  • This will be determined by total number of students who enter at the school divided by the number of kids who reach the top of the mountain. For example, if a school has 30 students registered and all 30 reach they would have a 100% rating. If a school has 750 students register and 452 complete the hike then they would have a 60% success rate and would be ranked accordingly. The top schools receive an award honoring their achievement.
  • Top schools will be announced on the site in January.

Teacher registration incentive

  • Coleman will send the first 50 teachers to sign up, register their school and have at least 10 students complete the student registration a $50 gift card redeemable at www.coleman.com using the name and school address used for registration
